City not too friendly to the big biz

- BY MICHAEL GARTLAND

It wasn't just a bunch of Queens lawmakers who sent Amazon running for the hills Thursday.

The Big Apple may see itself as the center of the universe, but political observers say Northern Virginia and Nashville had a lot more going for them when the online giant came a-knocking.

“Privately, the (Virginia) governor kept the key legislators fully informed. You didn't have leaks,” said Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

“New York politics is just byzantine. There are so many more power centers there than there are in Virginia.”

Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio, the two key political architects of the now-blown Long Island City deal, took great care to keep the details of it under wraps — they even entered into a nondisclosure agreement, lest an elected official with loose lips talk to the press.

The deal didn't leak before being announced, but the secrecy — as well as $3 billion in tax breaks — angered elected officials who felt they had a right to know.

“If it's fine, why did you do it in the dark?” said Fordham University political science professor Christina Greer.

“What did the governor and the mayor promise them? I don't know.”

The lawmakers who felt they should have been involved earlier in the process — state Sen. Mike Gianaris and City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer among them — dramatically reversed their support of the tech giant coming to New York when Cuomo and de Blasio announced the deal and sprung the details on them without warning.

In Virginia and Nashville, which are both still seeing Amazon hubs come their way, nothing like this came to pass.

Hank Sheinkopf, a longtime political consultant, said a lot of that has to do with the Big Apple's unique political mores.

“This was a cultural collision,” he said.

“There's just more Democracy here, which means you have more yelling and screaming and discussion. That is something Amazon is not used to.”
