Swastikas at B’klyn play area
A Brooklyn councilman raised the alarm early Monday about swastikas scrawled on playground equipment in his district.
Councilman Chaim Deutsch posted pictures to Twitter of the symbols of hate found at a play area at Brighton Second nd St. and Brightwater Court. in Brighton Beach.
“Are swastikas in playgrounds the new normal?” he wrote on Twitter. “Last night I was notified of swastikas on play equipment in Brighton Beach. Enough is enough. It’s way past time to take action.”
Deutsch said the NYPD’s 60th Precinct is investigating, and said the number of hate crimes across the city has sharply increased during the first two months of 2019. “It’s been a very high increase,” Deutsch said.
He called on Mayor de Blasio to create a hate crimes prevention office, and said he is drafting a bill that would require all five district attorneys to report the motive in each hate crime.
Deutsch said he is planning a citywide rally involving teens speaking out against intolerance.
“We have people who come from 150 different countries and we need to better understand each other’s culture,” he said. “A lot more needs to be done. This is about teaching kids to respect each other.”
Swastikas, other antiSemitic symbols and “Hail Hitler” were found at Public School 139 in Queens on Friday. School was out for winter break.
Police sources said the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident.
“In New York, we have zero tolerance for such vile acts of anti-Semitism,” Gov. Cuomo said on Sunday.
