Witness: He mulled slay of parents

- BY SHAYNA JACOBS

The hot-headed hubby accused of strangling his spouse to death in late 2009 plotted to kill his parents two years later — and even wanted his child to help — after they did him wrong like his wife did, his ex-gal pal said.

Roderick Covlin’s former flame was a star witness at his murder trial Tuesday, where she testified Covlin was so peeved about his parents’ efforts to get custody of his two kids, he wanted them dead.

Their efforts allegedly reminded him of his divorce with his late estranged wife Shele, who was found dead in her bathtub Dec. 31, 2009.

He discussed ways to poison them, set their house on fire or execute a fatal “karate chop” on his mother, according to the witness, Debra Oles. Oles (photo) said Covlin got “extremely angry” when he learned his folks, David and Carol Covlin, were trying to get custody of the kids in 2012.

“This is exactly what Shele was trying to do to me,” he allegedly whined to Oles.

She said Covlin researched poisons ricin and aconite after getting ideas from the crime dramas “Dexter” and “Breaking Bad.” He also cooked up a plan to get a “black man’s wig” and “black makeup” to use as an offensive disguise when he would ambush Carol.

“When she opened the doors he wanted to karate chop her in the throat and kill her,” she said.

The deranged dad even wanted Anna, 11, to put rat poison in her grandparents’ food, according to Oles, a North Carolina IT consultant who met Covlin through their shared love of backgammon.

None of the plans were executed.

The morning Shele died, Covlin played an online game of GridGammon with Oles until 1 a.m., she said. He claimed he was doing other work from home in that time.

Prosecutors say he slipped into Shele’s apartment and put her in a fatal chokehold.
