DA: Sicko blinds his grandma
An unhinged Long Island man blinded his grandmother by gouging out the 78-year-old woman’s eyes — then shrugged off the attack when questioned by police, officials said Wednesday.
“This is an extremely disturbing case,” Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said while announcing the indictment against 30-year-old Michael Grief (photo) of Sayville.
“We will take all appropriate action to make sure that not only his family is safe, but that the public is safe from this dangerous individual.”
Grief is facing 25 years in prison for the Feb. 19 assault. Prosecutors said that he was arguing with his grandmother at their home at 7:45 p.m. because she wouldn’t allow him to use her debit card.
He had already used the card to clean out her account, leaving it overdrawn by $1,000, officials said.
As the argument heated up, Grief’s grandmother, fearing for her life, went outside to get a neighbor when her grandson attacked her and gouged out her eyes with his fingers, authorities said.
Her eyeballs ruptured during the assault, officials said.
After eight hours of surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital, doctors gave her a less than a 1% chance of regaining her sight.
Grief was indifferent when cops took him into custody, Sini said.
“When the defendant was talking to police and was told he had gouged his grandmother’s eyes out, he was very dismissive,” Sini said. “He said, ‘So?’ shrugged his shoulders, and appeared to be apathetic toward the situation.”
Grief was indicted on assault charges and ordered held on $500,000 bail. He’s expected to face the charges in court this month.
