JETS’ DYNAMIC DUO

Addition of Bell will elevate Darnold’s game

- MANISH MEHTA

Le'Veon Bell should be able to help take Sam Darnold's game to the next logical level.

The dynamic dual threat superstar has the skills to electroshock Gang Green's offense. Darnold, frankly, will be the biggest beneficiary.

"Obviously I've watched and heard about him last year,” Bell said about the young Jets quarterback Thursday night. “I know he has a lot of potential … I'm just looking forward to being his security blanket, a guy he can rely on. Building our chemistry up in the backfield. He can be a guy that I can rely on and vice versa. The more time that I'm around him and the more practice that we get together, the better our relationship will be.

”But I obviously think he has a high ceiling and his potential is through the roof."

Bell said that Darnold's presence “absolutely” played a role in his decision to sign with the Jets after sitting out the entire 2018 season.

Real talk: So did cold hard cash. Gang Green offered the most green ($26 million through in the first two years of a four-year pact).

Regardless, it doesn't hurt that the three-time Pro Bowler gets to work with a promising young signal caller with his arrow pointing to the sun. Bell can do for Darnold what Todd Gurley did for Jared Goff with the Rams.

“Seeing a guy like him so young and so talented and knowing maybe he just needs another weapon,” Bell said. “You never know what he can do with another weapon. He's such a talented young guy. So, he definitely was a valuable reason as to why I chose to come here.”

Bell admitted that he should be able to help Darnold by his mere presence on the field. He's right. Bell's varied skillset will allow Adam Gase to deploy him everywhere from the backfield to the slot to outside the numbers.

The 27-year-old Bell said that he'll also be able to give Darnold some pointers thanks to years of experience.

“He's a young guy,” Bell said. “When I was young coming up in this league, I just kind of went out there and played football and made plays. The old guys for me as we were going just kind of talked to me about little things here and there. But the only thing I would really do for Sam right now is just try to be his (security) blanket … just take him under my wing and pick his mind a little bit to see what he likes to do and what he's comfortable with. Because I've been in the league a little longer … so I feel like I can adjust a little better. I can make his job easier.”

“He's got a lot of things to work with,” Bell added. “I'm just going to try to do everything in my power to make his job as easy as possible.”

Bell can be Darnold's new best friend on the field.
