Trash-chute pup’s new leash on life

- BY THOMAS TRACY

Buck has a new friend — and this one has a gun, shield and a few stars on his collar.

A big-hearted NYPD chief has adopted the young pit bull who was tossed down a garbage chute in the Bronx last year and left to die, officials said.

Buck — whose full name is Buckbeak, after the mystical “hippogriff” saved from execution by boy wizard Harry Potter — was found in the trash at the River Park Towers on Richman Plaza in Morris Heights on Dec. 1.

The mistreated pup, who suffered severe internal injuries and at least two broken legs, was taken to the ASPCA, which nursed Buck back to health.

Once Buck (below) was ready for adoption, an NYPD chief offered to take him in. The officer wasn’t part of the dog’s rescue, but heard about Buck’s horrible treatment, officials said.

The canine-loving cop, who has been caring for Buck for the last three months, has asked not to be identified.

Howard Lawrence, vice president of ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement said Buck is “thriving” with his new dad.

“The ASPCA is grateful that our partnership with the NYPD continues to give animals like Buckbeak, now named Buck, a second chance,” Lawrence said. “We are also thankful that a member of the NYPD has opened their home to Buck.”

Cops still haven’t found the person who abandoned the pup in the trash chute, officials said.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity should call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
