Bloom: I’m not saying sorry & I’m not running

- BY LARRY MCSHANE

Sorry seems to be the hardest word for ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The billionaire businessman joked Friday that he was unwilling, unlike other candidates, to launch the “apology tour” necessary for him to wage a successful 2020 campaign for the White House.

“Joe Biden went out and apologized for being male, over 50, white,” Bloomberg said to chuckles at the Bermuda Business Executive Forum. “Beto, whatever his name is, he’s apologized for being born.”

Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke recently offered mea culpas for mischaracterizing his wife’s role in raising their kids and for his writings as a teenager, while promising in the future to “acknowledge the truth of the criticism that I have enjoyed white privilege.”

Biden offered his regrets earlier this year for his part in writing the oft-criticized 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. Bloomberg defended it as “a pretty good anti-crime bill.”

In a more serious vein, Bloomberg (photo) acknowledged his age was a factor while confessing he couldn’t envision a scenario for a successful presidential run.

“I think if I thought I could win, I would have,” he explained. “I just couldn’t see a path where I could get the nomination … unless I was willing to change all my views and go on what CNN called ‘an apology tour.’”

Bloomberg, who turned 77 last month, said he also realized that taking over as President only a few weeks before his 79th birthday “may not be the smartest thing to do.”
