Teen cuffed for racist threats in Va.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday after police said he’s behind the racist online threats that closed the schools in Charlottesville, Va., for two days this week.
The anonymous threats were made Wednesday afternoon on the website 4chan and targeted black and Hispanic students at Charlottesville High School, police said.
“The specific content of the threat contained vile, racially charged language, Police Chief RaShall Brackney said in a news conference Friday afternoon.
The teen, who was not identified because of his age, acted alone and referenced “ethnic cleansing” as the reason he was targeting minorities, Brackney said.
The suspect lives in a different school district a few miles from Charlottesville. That district, Albemarle, had a similar threat last week, but police said the two incidents are not related.
Charlottesville schools were closed Thursday and Friday as a precaution, but are expected to reopen Monday.
Charlottesville is the site of a 2017 white supremacist rally that brought Ku Klux Klan members and other racist protesters from outside the shadows. A 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, was killed during the march when a man rammed into a crowd of counterprotesters.
Following the violent rally, President Trump made an infamous remark when he said there were “fine people” on both sides of the rally, which critics saw as a defense of Neo-Nazis.
