Cop axed for fake tickets & bogus OT

- BY THOMAS TRACY

This cop wheely screwed up.

The city slammed the brakes on a Murray Hill officer’s career after he was caught writing summonses to bogus bicicylists from the comfort of his stationhouse — then tried to bill the department for overtime, the Daily News has learned.

Police Officer Varon Shepard, a 19-year NYPD veteran, was drummed out of the department after pleading guilty Thursday to filing a false instrument.

Shepard, 49, wrote two summonses out to a Carlos Dejesus for disobeying city bicycling rules on Third Ave. near E. 44th St. on Feb. 25, 2018, authorities said.

In reality, Shepard was six blocks away, inside the 17th Precinct stationhouse on E. 51st St. and he sat there until 12:45 p.m., according to court records.

“It was impossible for (Shepard) to have issued said summonses because the defendant was inside the precinct at the time (he) claimed to have issued the summonses,” Manhattan prosecutors noted in court papers.

NYPD Internal Affairs investigators learned of the chicanery three days later and quickly figured out that Dejesus was a figment of Shepard’s imagination, prosecutors said.

To make matters worse, Shepard also put in an overtime request for four hours he “claimed to have been out in the field and when he claimed to have issued the summonses to Carlos Dejesus,” authorities said.

Shepard pleaded guilty in Manhattan Criminal Court with the understanding that the case will be dismissed and sealed if he keeps his nose clean for the next six months.

As part of his deal, he agreed to leave the police department immediately.

Law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case said Shepard “vested out,” meaning he was able to keep his pension.

Calls to Shepard and his attorney were not immediately returned.
