‘Sesame St.’ to hit road for big 5-0
Here’s a chance to meet the stars of “Sesame Street” and maybe become one, too.
The long-running series’ iconic puppets are hitting the road for a tour of interactive events across America this summer to commemorate 50 years of Oscar the Grouch, Bert & Ernie, Elmo, Big Bird, the Cookie Monster and more, the Sesame Workshop organization announced Tuesday.
Officially titled the “Sesame Street Road Trip,” scenes for upcoming episodes will be shot with local kids as they mingle with the characters. Noteworthy people and places in each city will also be featured in the taping.
The tour kicks off on June 1 at Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park in upper Manhattan, where fans can take advantage of photo opportunities, a massive maze, a stage show and other family friendly attractions.
The event is free and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“It started 50 years ago — a colorful community of monsters, birds, grouches, and humans,” reads a description of the tour on the Sesame Street website. “A place where everyone counts. For our anniversary, we are bringing people together from streets far and wide to celebrate 50 years and counting.”
“Sesame Street” premiered in 1969 and begins its 50th season in November.
After starting in New York, the “Sesame Street” crew will head to Washington for an event on June 8, followed by Pittsburgh (June 15), Detroit (June 22), Chicago (June 29) and Dallas (July 6).
The tour continues every weekend through Aug. 3, when the road trip wraps up in Los Angeles.
