Don fights Dem try for finance docs

- BY DAVE GOLDINER

President Trump stepped up his legal war with congressional Democrats Monday, firing off a suit to block a subpoena that seeks 10 years of the president’s financial records.

The latest salvo in the escalating feud between Trump and lawmakers claims that Rep. Elijah Cummings “has no legitimate legislative purpose” to demand the documents, which could reveal that the mogul-turned-president dramatically overstated his net worth and inflated the value of key assets.

The lawsuit accuses emboldened Democrats of mounting a campaign of “presidential harassment” to damage Trump and wielding their new majority in the House of Representatives to uncover dirt about his past.

“Instead of working with the president to pass bipartisan legislation that would actually benefit Americans, House Democrats are singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically,” the lawsuit states.

“The Democrat Party … has declared all-out political war,” the suit says. “Subpoenas are their weapons of choice.”

Cummings (photo), a Maryland Democrat and chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the subpoena this month to Mazars USA, an accountant for Trump before he was elected president and for the Trump Organization. It seeks years of documents involving Trump, who has refused to make public his tax returns, and his sprawling real estate firm.

Cummings fired back at Trump, calling the lawsuit a frivolous effort to avoid legitimate scrutiny of his finances.

“This complaint reads more like political talking points than a reasoned legal brief, and it contains a litany of inaccurate information,” Cumming said.

The lawsuit blasts Cummings for not telling Republicans on the panel about the subpoena. It derides him for relying on the testimony of one-time Trump fixer and personal attorney Michael Cohen.
