Bibi plannin’ Mar-o-Trump in Golan Hts.
Bibi knows how to get The Donald’s attention.
Embattled Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu (photo) said Tuesday he wants to throw Donald Trump a bone by naming a contested Jewish settlement after the U.S. president.
Trump, whose love of naming objects after himself is well known, issued a proclamation last month recognizing Israel’s right to the Golan Heights, and Netanyahu — who was recently elected to his fifth term despite facing corrupting charges — made it clear he wants to return the favor.
“All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu said in a video posted to his YouTube account.
“Therefore, after the Passover holiday, I intend to bring to the government a resolution calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump,” he said.
Netanyahu made the comments during a tour of the Golan Heights with his wife and sons.
A White House spokesman referred to the State Department, which did not return a request for comment.
Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights broke with longstanding U.S. foreign policy and United Nations resolutions.
Israel captured a portion of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and control over the area has since been of intense debate. Some 25,000 Israelis live in settlements in the Golan Heights that the UN considers illegal.
Last month, Syria’s Foreign Ministry ripped Trump’s recognition of Israel’s right to the Golan Heights as a “blatant attack on Syria’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity.”
