Philly cop busted in B’klyn dog nab

- BY RIKKI REYNA AND JOHN ANNESE

A Philadelphia cop in full uniform went to Brooklyn to help his girlfriend steal her brother’s Maltese dog — and when the intimidation didn’t work, he resorted to a chokehold, authorities said.

Angel Lopez, 30 — clad in his blue uniform, complete with shield, cuffs and gun — was joined by his girlfriend as they paid her brother a visit in his Bushwick bedroom at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a complaint in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

“Where is the dog? I want the dog!” Lopez bellowed, shoving the man several times, the complaint says. He then grabbed his belt and postured, allegedly telling the man: “If you hit me, I am going to arrest you for assaulting an officer.”

Lopez then punched the man in the head, said the complaint. The victim scooped up the pooch and said he was leaving, and didn’t want trouble.

At that point, Lopez and his girlfriend held the man down in the bedroom, the complaint alleges. Lopez put the victim in a chokehold, police said, while the woman wrested the Maltese from him and left.

Lopez was arrested Friday on a dozen charges, including robbery, assault and coercion through his public position. He was released on his own recognizance after a court appearance Saturday, and is due back in court June 28.

His girlfriend has not yet been arrested, police said Sunday. She is still believed to have the dog.

There’s a good chance Lopez will never again wear a police uniform.

Philadelphia police suspended him for 30 days, with the intent to fire him, Police Commissioner Richard Ross told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“It’s so very unfortunate that someone will give up a good job for something that’s so ridiculous,” Ross told the paper.
