D’Angelo cited for pot possession at LaGuardia

D'Angelo Russell apparently likes his iced tea with herbals.

The Nets point guard was cited for marijuana possession at LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday night after TSA found weed stashed inside two containers — including a can of Arizona Iced Tea.

Russell, 23, was caught during a routine search of his checked bag before he flew from New York to his hometown of Louisville. When questioned by police, Russell claimed it was his brother's bag, a source with knowledge told the Daily News. More weed was discovered inside a Santa Cruz Shredder, a source said, which is commonly used to grind pot.

He received a summons for possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and was released to fly home.

USA Today, which broke the story, reported about the iced tea can. The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday night at Terminal C.

Even if he pleads guilty in Queens criminal court, Russell may not face punishment from the NBA since there's no suspension until a third violation of its marijuana policy.

Russell was a first-time All-Star last season while leading the Nets into the playoffs, but his future is up in the air as a restricted free agent. The Nets can match any offer, but may instead relinquish Russell's rights and chase max free agents.

He averaged 21 points and seven assists last season, but was mostly bottled up in the first-round playoff loss to the Sixers. Russell, the former No. 2 overall pick, was traded from the Lakers in 2017.
