OUR CITY, YOUR PAPER

-

No one covers the city like the Daily News. For nearly 100 years, New York’s Hometown Newspaper has been your eyes and ears — and your voice.

Do you have a story you think we should tell? Call us at (212) 210NEWS. This is your paper, and we are committed to covering the issues that matter to you. Here are some of our top stories from the last week: Wait in the lobby: As Mayor de Blasio (photo) gets set to officially announce his run for president, he’s facing controversy here in the city. Even though Hizzoner says he hasn’t met with a lobbyist in more than a year, his deputy mayors, commissioners and high-ranking aides had at least 358 meetings and talks with both commercial and in-house lobbyists in just 11 months, The News reported exclusively.

Car-crash coverup: Speaking of the mayor, an NYPD vehicle carrying de Blasio was in an accident in August 2015, but the head of his protection unit covered it up to protect the mayor’s image, text messages obtained by The News reveal.

Inspector Howard Redmond, who is still in the post, was allegedly concerned about the “optics” of the situation. In the wake of our story, de Blasio said he doesn’t know why it wasn’t reported. Crooked clergyman: The high priest of a Harlem house of worship used church funds as his personal ATM, bilking the faithful for millions of dollars. Jermaine Grant, 43, the head of the Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and could face five years behind bars. In general disrepair: Ulysses S. Grant was the Union’s commanding general in the Civil War and later our 18th president, but his final resting place in Manhattan is not fit for a hero. The head of the Grant Monument Association wants it fixed up before 2022, the 200th anniversary of Grant’s birth. Stopping the hatchet man: When Mark Pickett saw a man with a hatchet try to attack a fellow straphanger, he sprang into action. His quick thinking spared Anthony Castro, 30, from getting hacked up.
