Maybin quickly making a difference

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

Cameron Maybin is here because of his defense and his speed. This week, the veteran outfielder has displayed both. Tuesday night, after having grounded into a double play to kill a seventh-inning rally, Maybin scored the winning run in the Yankees' 5-4 walk-off victory over the Mariners at the Stadium.

Maybin singled after Gio Urshela tied it and then stole second base.

“We had a feel. Sometimes you've got to gamble late in a game. Tight ballgame, we want to get to second right there, especially with the winning run on base,” Maybin said. “It worked out. It was huge for me to get over there. It was absolutely huge.”

DJ LeMahieu singled him home.

It's not the only impact Maybin has had in his short time with the Yankees. They did not go out and get the veteran outfielder for his bat, they wanted him for his ability to play defense. Saturday, he showed off how valuable his glove still is by robbing Twins infielder Jonathan Schoop of a home run.

“I've seen a lot of games here, I've played games here, so I had some background,” Maybin said. “And then when we got back here, I made sure to put the work in before I was out there.”

STANTON SIGHTING

Giancarlo Stanton has been a rare sight around the Yankees since the team announced he was dealing with a shoulder injury on the last road trip. Monday night, however, Stanton was in the clubhouse after the game and briefly spoke about the new injury.

Tuesday, Stanton was out on the field with his teammates for a short time, before heading back inside, presumably to the batting cages. He was scheduled to hit in there for the first time since he took a cortisone shot in his shoulder two weeks ago.

Boone said he had no update on Stanton before the game, but the sluggers' rehab bas been mysterious.

He was initially placed on the injured list with a biceps strain on April 1. When the team was in Anaheim, Boone announced Stanton had a shoulder issue that had shut down his rehab.

Monday night, Stanton said he did not know how the shoulder issue happened.

BACK OUT THERE

Dellin Betances, who threw for the first time in three weeks on Monday, said he felt fine on Tuesday and is looking forward to throwing again today.
