OUR CITY, YOUR PAPER
No one covers the city like the Daily News. For nearly 100 years, New York’s Hometown Newspaper has been your eyes and ears — and your voice.
Do you have a story you think we should tell? Call us at (212) 210-NEWS. This is your paper, and we are committed to covering the issues that matter to you. Here are some of our top stories from the past week:
He’s in: Mayor de Blasio finally confirmed the story first reported by The News: He’s running for president. The second-term mayor formally announced his candidacy Thursday, then jetted off to Iowa to hit the campaign trail. New Yorkers ripped the “out of touch” mayor’s bid to be the leader of the free world, and many wondered who would be running things here when de Blasio is traipsing all over the country.
Blaz made us blue: Four high-ranking ex-NYPD cops are suing the city, saying they were forced to retire to protect de Blasio and former Police Commissioner Bill Bratton from a federal bribery investigation. As The News reported exclusively, the four say they got the boot from the NYPD in 2016 after being linked to the pay-for-play probe involving de Blasio donors Jona Rechnitz and Jeremy Reichberg. On Monday, Reichberg was sentenced to four years in prison. Her gift of life: When Veronica Sarmiento of Queens found out that a 9-year-old in her neighborhood needed a kidney, she sprang into action. Sarmiento donated the organ to Zaheer Rahaman, a boy she had never met. Both (photo, right) have recovered well after surgery, with Zaheer’s doctor predicting, “He should do fine.” Abandoning the heroes: Cuts in the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund are worse than originally feared, with some people getting nothing. Janet Albanese, whose NYPD husband died in 2003 from 9/11related cancer says she is now getting “absolutely zero” from the fund. “I kinda laugh, and, like, really? This is crazy,” she said.
Super soaker: A contractor set up a high-powered sprinkler above the door of a Greenwich Village brownstone to keep drug users and others from loitering on the steps. “If they sit on the stoop, they get blasted,” said the contractor, Andrew Blanke. It’s pretty funny.”
Weiner’s out: Anthony Weiner is out on the streets again. The disgraced congressman — aka Carlos Danger — left a halfway house in the Bronx on Tuesday. He was there several months, after serving 15 months in a Massachusetts prison for sexting with a 15-year-old girl.
