Ocaz gets backing from Ben

It’s not every day that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has anything nice to say about a Trump cabinet member — or vice versa.

So it raised eyebrows when Ben Carson, the controversial secretary of housing and urban development, said he backs AOC’s push to end stringent “one strike” rules that target public housing tenants for evictions over minor drug offenses. Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx, Queens) was questioning Carson (inset) at a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee. She brought up the war on drugs push to get housing authorities to punish families with evictions if even one member of the family was convicted of a narcotics offense.

“A person could be stopped and frisked and be found in possession of a small amount of marijuana and then be evicted or have their entire family evicted from public housing,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

A related set of policies holds public tenants responsible for criminal actions of guests, leading to more evictions.

Carson says he opposes both measures and gave cautious approval to AOC’s push for a new law that would abolish them. The social media whiz also retweeted Daily News writer Michael McAuliff ’s message about her unusual agreement with Carson.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the HUD chief.

Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) roasted him over his lack of knowledge about foreclosures. A one-time housing official in California, Porter asked Carson if he knew the definition of “REO,” a common term meaning Real Estate Owned by a bank or other lender. “An Oreo?” he asked. When the lawmaker repeated the initials, Carson guessed that the first two letters referred to “real estate” but drew a blank on the third.
