GLEYBER & GARY!

Torres, Sanchez torture O’s again, but CC likely to miss next start:

BALTIMORE — The celebration was tempered Wednesday night. The Yankees pounded out five home runs with Gleyber Torres hitting two for his fourth multi-home run game of the season as they beat the Orioles 7-5 at Camden Yards.

While the Yankees (31-17) picked up their fourth straight win and eighth straight against the Orioles (15-34), they also took some hits.

CC Sabathia was able to grind out five innings and pick up his career 249th win, but those five innings were all his arthritic right knee could take.

After the win, Sabathia said it is likely he will have to miss his next start to have his knee drained and get a shot for the pain.

“I’ll probably take some time just to get that in there, get the medicine in there and work its magic,” Sabathia said. “It was hurting pretty bad tonight but I was able to get through it and kind of keep the team in the game. These guys have been playing some great defense and scoring some runs. It was good to get a win.”

Sabathia said he will likely head back to New York on Friday when the team moves on to Kansas City to have his knee drained and get a cortisone shot. It will be his second stint on the injured list this season. The Yankees have had 17 different players go on the IL this season and currently have a major-league leading 13 players on there.

James Paxton, on the IL with inflammation in his left knee, is going to Tampa to pitch a simulated game on Friday with the hope he can return when the Yankees return home next week. Luis Severino still has not begun throwing after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 lat strain six weeks ago. He is not expected back until after the All-Star Break.

The Yankees’ starting pitching rotation is stretched thin. Masahiro Tanaka avoided going on the IL after taking a hard-hit comebacker off the inside of his right shin in his last start. The Yankees were already leaning toward a bullpen day on Friday to fill Paxton’s next start.

But Aaron Boone, who as a secondyear

manager has his team in first place in the division despite the plague of injuries, remained optimistic.

“We’ve got a number of guys in there,” the Yankees manager said. “We’ve got Masa in there tomorrow. We’ll make it work.”

It works a lot easier when the Yankees are living up to their ‘Bombers’ nickname.

Torres had his second multi-home run game in the last three days Wednesday.

Torres had lead-off home runs in the third and fifth innings, his 11th and 12th home runs of the season. He has 10 homers against the Orioles this year, seven at Camden Yards, where he said he sees the ball well.

“I’m normal. I know a lot of things like I hit very well during that series with Baltimore, but I don’t think about too much,” Torres said. “I’m just trying to respect the game, be humble, respect the team and just play. Do my job and have fun. I think when I enjoy the game, I hit pretty well.“Clearly he enjoys facing the Orioles. All four of his multi-home run games this season have come against the Orioles and three have been here in Camden Yards. He is the first ever Yankee to have four multi-home run games against one team in the same season.

“He’s really locked in,” Boone said of Torres. “He is getting himself in a strong hitting position a lot, getting his A-swing off. Pretty special and obviously here it’s been pretty special.”

He’s not the only one that enjoys facing the Orioles, a rebuilding team that has already allowed 105 home runs. Gary Sanchez has nine of those, adding an absolute monster on Wednesday. His 444-foot homer in the fourth inning landed at the top of the first-level heading onto the concourse.

Thairo Estrada hit his third of the season — and his career — and DJ LeMahieu got his fourth.

“I mean it’s something as a club we do. We are going to hit the ball out of the ballpark and there are going to be games where we take advantage of some mistakes,” Boone said. “
