Two people die in L.I. plane crash

A 24-year-old man was fatally shot in the head as he defended a friend during a robbery in Washington Heights early Saturday, cops said.

Charles Reynoso of Brooklyn was hanging out with several friends outside a building on W. 166th St. at about 5 a.m. Two people were killed Saturday when their small plane crashed on Long Island’s North Fork, but a dog traveling with them survived, officials said.

The names of the pilot and passenger, a man and a woman, were not immediatel­y disclosed. The dog managed to get out of the wreck.

Surveillan­ce video captured images of the two men wanted for questionin­g in the slaying when a man with a gun tried to rob them.

“[The gunman] had taken his watch, chain and money and was moving onto his friend when [Charles] picked up a bottle and hit the guy in the head,” Reynoso’s heartbroke­n aunt Annie Santiago told the Daily News. “That’s when the gunman turned and shot my nephew.” Administra­tion said the Beechcraft A-36 went down at 9:15 a.m. in Southold Town, some 95 miles from Midtown. It caught fire as it crashed, making it almost impossible for the occupants to escape, officials said.

“The plane started to experience engine failure, circled once, tried to land in a farm field up in Laurel and then ultimately early Friday of Richard Lee Jones, 35.

Shots rang out just after midnight at Adee Ave. and Bouck Ave., striking 35-year-old Richard Lee Jones and hitting another man, 57, in the left shoulder.

Reynoso was rushed to New York-Presbyteri­an Hospital Columbia, where he died. No arrests have been made. Police initially said Reynoso was shot as two groups of men argued with each other, but confirmed late Saturday that the killing took place during an attempted robbery. The plane took off from Long Island’s MacArthur Airport about 9 a.m. and was on its way to New Bedford, Mass., according to officials.

Jones was shot next door to the building he lived in. relatives said.

“It was going to be his birthday next Sunday,” Santiago said as she choked back tears. “It’s going to be Father’s Day. But we were going to celebrate his birthday too.”

Santiago said Reynoso hoped to open a day care center. “He loved kids,” she said. “He was killed because he was robbed, and we need justice.” Ed Harbes, said the plane was flying low when it crashed.

“Firefighte­rs, police officers and rescue personnel arrived … within minutes and put out the ensuing fire,” she said.

“This is a sad tragedy.”

The FAA and the National Transporta­tion Safety Board are investigat­ing.

The image of the suspects released by cops on Saturday was taken minutes before the shooting.
