Don is ‘betraying our democracy’: Pelosi
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed President Trump for “betraying our democracy” by admitting that he would welcome foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election.
“The president gave us, once again, evidence that he does not know right from wrong,” Pelosi (photo) told a news conference.
Trump told ABC News there was nothing wrong with listening to dirt on rivals even if it came from foreign adversaries. He suggested he wouldn’t report such interference to the FBI, the opposite of what his own FBI director says any candidate should do so.
Legal experts have said accepting such assistance could violate campaign-finance law.
Russia’s efforts to peddle damaging information about Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Trump’s response to it is at the heart of the Russia-interference scandal.
The remark offers yet another nudge to Democrats, who are divided over impeachment. More progressives may back it after the statement, which critics called a virtual invitation for foreign powers to gather dirt on Trump’s rivals.
But Pelosi said Democrats must remain focused on bread-and-butter issues.
“We are going down this path to seek the truth for the American people and to hold the president accountable,” she said. “It has nothing to do with politics or any campaign.”
Democrats, including several presidential candidates, piled on Trump, pointing to the statement as evidence he must be removed from office before he does more damage to the democratic system.
“President Trump is once again welcoming foreign interference,” said Joe Biden.
“Let’s speak the truth: This president is a national security threat,” wrote Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California).
Even Trump loyalist Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) called Trump’s remarks “a mistake.”
