PAIN DELAY FOR METS!
Nimmo, Cano, Wilson look strong as they work back to the big leagues
For three key players on the Mets crowded injured list, rehab is the name of the game until further notice. Brandon Nimmo (neck inflammation), Robinson Cano (left quad tightness) and Justin Wilson (left elbow soreness) began rehab assignments with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. All three players competed well, so what are the Mets looking for before they return to the show?
When asked initially, Mets manager
Mickey Callaway provided a non-update.
“They’ve just been playing,” Callaway said. “We’re going to continue to rehab those guys. They’ve all come out of it pretty good. So that’s really it. Move on into their next rehab game.”
On the second try, Callaway was prodded for a clearer answer on, least, Wilson and Nimmo’s outlook.
“Wilson, it’s just more reps,” Callaway said. “He’s been out for quite a long time now. We want to just get him in a few games. Maybe one more than a few. Then check the video and make sure the pitches are crisp and mechanics are clean.”
Wilson has been sidelined with an ailing left elbow since April 22, save for a brief return in one poor outing he had (two earned runs, three hits, one inning pitched) on May 6. His lefthanded arsenal is an asset the Mets bullpen sorely missed.
Nimmo went 0-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored over seven innings played in right field on Tuesday. Cano went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored across five innings at second base. Wilson pitched one inning and gave up one hit while striking out two batters.
“With Nimmo, I think it’s getting
out there and getting this progression done,” Callaway said.
CITI LIGHTS, HOMERS RIGHT
The Mets have homered in 17-straight home games, the longest such streak in franchise history, and have hit 34 home runs in that span. Overall, the Mets have homered in 11 straight games since June 1 with 20 dingers in that stretch (which ranks as the longest streak of the season). The last time the Mets held a longer homer streak was from April 5-15, 2017 (11 games, 22 homers).
WELCOME BACK, SETH
Seth Lugo has hurled 6.1 scoreless innings since coming off the injured list on May 31. He improved to a 3-0 record and 2.51 ERA with seven walks and 42 strikeouts this season. In 20 appearances since April 7, Lugo owns a 1.26 ERA with four walks and 37 strikeouts. Lugo had posted a 12.27 ERA with three walks and five strikeouts in his first four appearances of the season.
