have been making runs in the playoffs before I came, so I knew they were a talented team. And I just came in with the right mindset, let’s go out and win ball games. I texted (teammate Kyle Lowry) probably a day later — or the day that I got traded and told him I said, ‘Let’s go out and do something special.’ I know your best friend left (DeMar DeRozen was traded to the Spurs for Leonard). I know you’re mad, but let’s make this thing work out. And we are here today.”

Still, the night — and certainly the series — could also be remembered for potentially devasting injuries.

Thompson’s frightening moment occurred with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. He was fouled by Danny Green on a dunk attempt and his knee buckled on the landing, sending Thompson to the court clutching his leg.

Thoughts immediately went to Durant and his torn Achilles in Game 5, a dynasty-shifting moment. Thompson, like Durant, can be a free agent in the summer and is in line for a max contract. His torn ACL is devastating and heartbreaking.

Thompson was helped off the court, and limped through the tunnel toward medical attention. But halfway through, he turned around, jogged back to the foul line and buried his two free throws. If he hadn’t attempted the shots, Thompson would’ve been ineligible to return.

But it didn’t matter. That was it for Thompson. He was subbed off and ruled out for the game because of a knee injury.

Reports suggested Thompson was eager to play again and did not hear anything pop in his knee. Still, the Warriors were cautious and shelved their AllStar.

On Thursday, he scored 30 points in 32 minutes — shooting 8-for-12 from the field, 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 10for-10 from the foul line.
