Suit: Fired because I’m lesbian

- BY LEONARD GREENE

A woman who worked helping children and families lost her job because of her nontraditional family, according to a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court Friday.

Precious Floyd said her job with the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services in Brooklyn was going well until last year when her wife called while she was in a meeting with her supervisor, Assistant Director Israel Levy.

Floyd said she began working as an agency counselor in 2015, and was promoted to resident manager at a Brooklyn site three years later. About a month after her promotion, in November 2018, Floyd got a phone call from her wife, and claims her career path changed.

When the call came, Floyd ignored it, according to the lawsuit, but Levy said she could take the call.

“Pick it up,” Levy said. “No, it’s just my wife.” she replied, drawing a confused look from her boss. “Yes, I have a wife, too.”

“Upon discovering Ms. Floyd’s sexual orientation, Mr. Levy began treating Ms. Floyd significantly worse, requiring her to clock out for lunch, though other employees were not required to, and harassing her during her breaks to the extent that Ms. Floyd stopped taking breaks altogether, according to the lawsuit.

“Mr. Levy’s mistreatment escalated until ultimately, on January 10, 2019, Mr. Levy terminated Ms. Floyd, alleging that she committed ‘time theft’ while on the job,” the suit claims. The “time theft” accusation was a “pretext for her termination,” court papers allege.

An agency rep said they don’t comment on pending litigation.

The lawsuit does not specify an amount for damages.
