Oh baby! Ramos find out during game that his wife’s expecting

- BY DEESHA THOSAR

Wilson Ramos found out he was going to be a dad (again) with a surprise visit from his wife, Yely, in a most unanticipated situation. Ramos stepped into the ondeck circle during the fourth inning of the Mets’ suspended game against the Cardinals on Thursday night. Before Ramos could even settle into his preparation, he saw a familiar face holding a sign on the other side of the netting behind the ondeck circle.

Yely held a sign that said she’s pregnant with their third child while his four-year-old daughter shrieked in excitement.

“I just read really quick what the banner said,” Ramos said. “I saw (Yely’s) face. My daughter was telling me, ‘Dad! It’s another baby! It’s another baby!’ That was an amazing moment to keep that secret really well. She didn’t tell me anything for like eight weeks. But that was a great moment.”

The moment was cut short because Todd Frazier, leading off the fourth inning, hacked at the first pitch and sent a fly ball

to deep center field for the first out. Ramos only had time to take two practice swings before he walked away from his wife and daughter, smiling and laughing, for his next at-bat.

“I got very surprised. I didn’t know,” Ramos said. “She kept that secret very well. But I got very excited. It’s another blessing in my life. That made me feel really good and really happy in that moment.”

Ramos will welcome his third child in the months to come. The 31-year-old Mets catcher has a one-year-old son in addition to his daughter. Thursday night was the first time Yely surprised Ramos at the ballpark with the exciting news.

Yely shocked her husband on a smaller level with the news of his young son two years ago. Ramos said Yely gave him a box one day and when he opened the lid, he saw a balloon with a baby on it.

Once Ramos found out on Thursday he would welcome his third child, he said it was difficult to focus on his at-bat following Frazier’s flyout. That was evident when Ramos struck out looking on five pitches against Cardinals righthander Jack Flaherty.

“But I always concentrate on doing my job,” Ramos said. “I don’t like putting another thing in my head when I go to the plate. But that moment made me so excited. Finally I got struck out, nothing good.”

LATE SCRATCH

Brandon Nimmo was scratched from the Triple-A Syracuse lineup on Friday night with “neck soreness,” the Mets announced. Nimmo was rehabbing with Syracuse due to his recovery from neck inflammation, so the setback is not a good sign for the outfielder.

TIGHT BACK

Robert Gsellman pitched for the first time in a week during the Mets’ 9-5 loss to the Cardi

nals on Friday. He recorded a scoreless inning with just one hit. He went back to the dugout and complained of a tight back, per Mets manager Mickey Callaway.

Gsellman will go through some tests and receive treatment as part of a further evaluation. But the right-hander is a key component of the top arms in the struggling Mets bullpen. If Gsellman is forced to miss games, it will spell trouble for the Mets.

26TH MAN

The Mets called up righthander Tyler Bashlor to be their 26th man for the second game on Friday. Due to the remainder of Thursday night’s suspended game picking up in the ninth inning on Friday, each time is allowed an extra player on their roster for the previously scheduled nightcap against the Cardinals at Citi Field.

Bashlor is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in three games this season with the Mets. The righty is 2-1 with two saves and a 6.14 ERA in 14 games with Triple-A Syracuse this year.
