Court Judge Kenneth Holder to ask for continued representation in the case by Legal Aid attorneys. The agency had previously represented a potential witness in the case against Ransom, creating a potential conflict of interest.
“From my understanding, I believe the district attorney’s office wants Legal Aid to be removed from the case,” said Ransom. “I believe Legal Aid will work zealously on my behalf.”
Holder granted the request for continued Legal Aid representation, and the defendant is due back in court Aug. 22.

Det. Brian Simonsen was killed by friendly fire while responding to a Feb. 12 robbery at a T-Mobile store in Richmond Hills as cops fired 42 shots. Authorities charged Ransom ignited the deadly confrontation by running toward the seven police officers with a replica Colt handgun in his hand.
Though he initially claimed the death followed a prank gone horribly wrong, cops accused the suspect with four previous cell phone store robberies prior to the fatal holdup. Ransom survived despite taking eight bullets in the NYPD fusillade, and a police sergeant was also wounded but escaped with his life.
Simonsen, 42, was struck in the chest and mortally wounded. He was survived by his wife, Leanne, and his mother, Linda.
