Brooklyn cyclist dies after car hit

- BY ROCCO PARASCANDOLA AND THOMAS TRACY

A bicyclist was fatally struck by a car in Brooklyn, the second cyclist to die on a city street this week, police said Friday.

Ernest Askew, 57, was heading west on Sutter Ave. in Brownsville when he was hit by a white Hyundai at Chester St. just before 11 p.m. Thursday , cop said.

Askew, who lived about a half-mile away, was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died.

The driver, 18, went to the same hospital with a hand injury he suffered when Askew crashed into his front windshield, shattering the glass, cops said. No charges were filed. Marco Conner, coexecutive director of advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, said Askew was the 14th bicyclist to die on city streets this year.

“The number of cyclists killed in 2019 has already surpassed the number killed in the entirety of the prior year,” Conner said.

On Tuesday, a box truck killed a bike messenger on Sixth Ave. near W. 24th St. The driver drove off but returned to the scene, claiming he didn’t realize he had hit anyone.

He was issued five citations and released, cops said.
