HS stabber ‘egged’ kids on: witness

- BY MIKEY LIGHT AND LEONARD GREENE

A teenager accused of stabbing a classmate to death and wounding the victim’s friend was egging students on and challenging them to a fight, a witness at the his trial said Monday.

According to another student, Abel Cedeno looked like he was ready to take on the whole class at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, where prosecutors said Cedeno, armed with a knife, clashed with a pair of students — one of whom ended up dead.

Matthew McCree, 15, died in the third-period history fight, and his best friend, Ariane LaBoy, 16, was wounded so badly during the Sept. 27, 2017 brawl that he spent two days in a coma.

Tyler Lilavois, 17, a friend of the victims who was in the class that day, said he did not realize McCree had been stabbed until he saw all the blood on the floor.

“I thought Abel was punching him in the stomach until I stood up and everybody ran over to help Matthew,” Lilavois testified at Cedeno’s trial in Bronx Supreme Court. “His body looked very weak, like he lost all energy in his body.”

Lilavois said Cedeno had been itching for a fight, and got one after someone hit him with a paper ball during class.

“He goes, ‘Whoever threw that is a p—-y.’ He was egging kids on,” Lilavois said.

When McCree apologized, Cedeno confronted him, Lilavois said.

Lilavois lost his composure later when Cedeno’s lawyers showed him cell phone video of the fight.

“All we’re doing is traumatizing the witness further,” said Assistant Bronx DA Nancy Borko.

Cedeno has been charged with manslaughter. His lawyers said he was defending himself after months of relentless bullying by students who taunted him for being bisexual. They said he brought the knife to school for protection.

Cedeno has waived his right to a jury trial. Judge Michael Gross will decide his fate.
