Epstein’s enablers

-

How does a man about town allegedly get away with abusing dozens of underage girls in multiple states over half a decade? Answer: with lots and lots of money, and lots and lots of help. Ultra-rich Jeffrey Epstein stood in federal court Monday. The charge: luring dozens of underage girls to his 71st St. manse, where the feds say he pressured them to give him nude massages and other sexual favors in exchange for cash. If convicted, he could land in jail for decades.

But if it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to let many be abused. The feds alleged Epstein conspired with “employees and associates who facilitated his conduct by, among other things, contacting victims and scheduling their sexual encounters” with him.

His perverse — er, illegal — taste was no secret in wider circles either. “Terrific guy,” Donald Trump said of Epstein in a 2002 New York Magazine profile. “It is even said that he likes beautiful women

as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

FBI agents who raided Epstein’s Manhattan home last weekend found CDs in a locked safe labeled “Girl pics nude,” “Misc nudes 1” and the like. This is a man who, even as a registered sex offender, acted with impunity.

Wonder why: After he was arrested in Florida on similar charges more than a decade ago, the Palm Beach state attorney got him indicted on a single paltry misdemeanor charge. Then, Florida U.S. Attorney and current U.S. Labor Secretary Alex Acosta got involved, and proceeded to cut another sweetheart deal.

Epstein wound up serving 13 months in prison, a deal the Miami Herald — whose outstanding reporting has resurfaced all the sordid details — called one of the “most lenient sentences for a serial sex offender in U.S. history.”

Epstein is finally being forced to face real justice; his enablers, we hope, will all be exposed. Be happy about that, and be furious it took this long.
