Cops ID 2nd suspect in pepper-spray hate attack
Police on Tuesday identified a man wanted for attacking two transgender filmmakers in Queens.
David Gonzalez (inset), 34, is one of two people cops say pepper-sprayed transgender women Norma Ureiro and Bianey Garcia on Roosevelt Ave. in Jackson Heights about 4 a.m. on June 29 — a day before millions took part in the city’s annual Pride Parade.
The victims were filming a documentary about violence against transgender people when they were attacked.
A woman with Gonzalez, 24-year-old Paola Custodio, was arrested that morning and charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment. Custodio and Gonzalez allegedly approached them and started hurling anti-LGBT slurs at them and calling them prostitutes.
Cops say Custodio pepper-sprayed the victims, hitting one of them in the face and chest. She was quickly found and arrested.
But Gonzalez returned about an hour later, police said, and pepper-sprayed Garcia, who was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment. Cops had been looking for Gonzalez ever since.
“This time it was only pepper spray, but next time it could be a knife or a gun,” Ureiro, 43, said at a protest in Queens over the incident two days after it happened.
Custodio was released without bail after being arraigned in Queens Criminal Court. An order of protection was issued barring her from contact with Ureiro.
Gonzalez is described as 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
