Blue’s top pick Jones signs on

-

Daniel Jones signed his rookie contract with the Giants on Monday night, according to sources, becoming the 10th and final member of the team’s 2019 NFL Draft class to put pen to paper. The quarterback followed third-round pick Oshane Ximines, an edge rusher out of Old Dominion, who had signed Monday morning after coming to terms on Sunday night.

So Jones, the No. 6 overall pick out of Duke, will be on the field with the rest of the Giants’ rookies and select veterans for today’s first partial-squad practice of training camp after reporting on Monday.

The full team is scheduled to report for the official start of training camp on Wednesday before the first full-squad practice on Thursday.

Jones, 22, signed on the eve of camp similar to Saquon Barkley, the No. 2 overall selection in 2018 who inked the day he arrived for his rookie camp, also on July 22.

Jones’ draft slot calls for a four-year rookie contract with a $25.6 million total value, per overthecap.com, including a $16.6 million signing bonus.

The cap hits, based on the standard contract for a No. 6 overall pick, would be $4.6 million in 2019, $5.8 million in 2020, $6.9 million in 2021 and $8.1 million in 2022. He’d then be eligible for a fifth-year option, though if Jones is the player that GM Dave Gettleman believes he is, he’ll have signed a long-term extension before the Giants have to exercise that option.

BEEFING UP AT SAFETY

The Giants are hosting free-agent safeties Tre Boston and Johnathan Cyprien on visits early this week to possibly add depth at an area of weakness.

Antoine Bethea, 34, and Jabrill Peppers, 23, are penciled in for now as Big Blue’s starting free and strong safeties, respectively, in their first year on the team.

But there is no telling how well that duo will fare and the depth behind the pair is paper thin, especially after reserve Kamrin Moore’s suspension last week following an arrest for an alleged domestic violence incident.

Moore’s suspension also is pending further investigation, so it’s possible the Giants could release him outright, as well.

Veteran Michael Thomas is another backup, meanwhile, and rookie fourth-round corner Julian Love may move to the back end and compete with reserves Sean Chandler and Kenny Ladler.
