Don twit snit over assault rap for A$AP

- BY PETER SBLENDORIO

A$AP Rocky was formally hit with an assault charge in Sweden on Thursday — and the rapper’s most prominent U.S. “fan” is not happy about it.

President Trump, who has championed A$AP’s cause, on Thursday evening weighed in on the charges, which stem from a brawl last month.

“Very disappointed in Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for being unable to act. Sweden has let our African American Community down in the United States,” he tweeted. “I watched the tapes of A$AP Rocky, and he was being followed and harassed by troublemakers. Treat Americans fairly! #FreeRocky.”

Five minutes later, he tweeted: “Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM. We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem! #FreeRocky.”

The rapper’s lawyer said a trial for the artist, a 30-yearold Harlem native, is set to start Tuesday.

Rocky (photo), whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been under Swedish detention since July 3 for his role in a fight in Stockholm three days earlier. Footage of the fight published by TMZ shows Rocky and members of his entourage involved in the physical altercation with at least one other man.

Earlier this month, Rocky posted video to Instagram showing two men confronting the rapper and his crew, with one of the men appearing to hurl headphones at a Rocky colleague. Rocky is seen trying to calm the dispute.

“We think it was self-defense, but the prosecutor has chosen to go with the injured party’s version,” Rocky’s attorney said, according to CNN.

Prosecutor Daniel Suneson said Thursday he had “come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime ... despite claims of selfdefense and provocation.”
