Trump deserves impeach: Nadler
House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler declared Sunday that President Trump “richly deserves impeachment.”
Days after chairing the House of Representatives’ long-awaited testimony of former special counsel Robert Mueller, then alluding to the possibility of using that information to impeach the president, the New York congressman cut to the chase on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“My personal view is that [Trump] richly deserves impeachment,” Nadler told host Jake Tapper. “He has done many impeachable offenses, he’s violated the law six ways from Sunday, but that’s not the question.”
According to Nadler, the question is whether Democrats in Congress can make a case against Trump that the public will support. He feels Mueller’s testimony last week, which some cable news outlets dismissed as boring, was important because Mueller directly rebutted months of false claims that his office’s report exonerated the president of obstructing justice during the special counsel’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“We’ve broken the logjam,” Nadler said. “The president and the attorney general were lying to the American people constantly, saying the Mueller report found no obstruction or collusion and exonerated the president.”
Nadler was also asked if he felt Trump should be prosecuted after he leaves office and is no longer immune to indictment.
“It is clear that if it were not for the Department of Justice opinion that a sitting president cannot be indicted, anyone else who did what he did would have been indicted for at least five different major crimes,” Nadler said.
Trump has been critical of Nadler and his efforts to undermine his presidency, and stooped to calling him “pencilnecked” at a March rally.
“He’s got the smallest, thinnest neck I’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “He is not a longball hitter.”
