Roll of honor

-

At 10 this morning, Donald Trump will do, on behalf of the American people, what should have been done many years ago. He will put a presidential signature on a piece of paper enacting a law that provides permanent financial support to the heroes and victims sickened or felled by the toxins released when terrorists toppled the World Trade Center.

Trump deserves the thanks of everyone for ending this long struggle and keeping the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund open and solvent. It will cost billions, but the price paid by thousands of first responders and others was far higher.

Many others need to be thanked. Some hold or held elected office. Others are in government behind the scenes. Some are from labor or health care. Most are alive, some are deceased, but all form a community, one we consider this Editorial Board and the entire Daily News a close part of.

If we had room, we would detail the contributions of each. Instead, trust us: These were the people who made all the difference.

Darnall, Dan Donovan, John Feal, Gerard Fitzgerald, Kimberly Flynn, Kevin Fogarty, Vito Fossella, Kirsten Gillibrand, Al Hagan, Alvin Hellerstein, Dr. Robin Herbert, Kelly Hennessy, Dr. John Howard, Denis Hughes, Brooke Jamison, Dr. Kerry Kelly, Pete King, Jake Lemonda, Dr. Stephen Levin, Carolyn Maloney, Dr. Jim Melius, Ed Mills, Dr. Jacqueline Moline, Jerry Nadler, Lucy Panza, Dr. David Prezant, Dr. Joan Reidman, Harold Schaitberger, Andy Schneider, Chuck Schumer, Peg Seminario, Chris Shays, Joel Shufro, Joe Soldevere, Kenny Specht, Jon Stewart, Deena Tauster and Joseph Zadroga.

Zadroga’s son was NYPD Detective James Zadroga, whose death in 2006 from WTC-related causes was among the first. Those early victims included the FDNY’s Stephen Johnson, James Godbee of the NYPD and EMS Paramedic Debbie Reeve. Their deaths should have been enough to get the government to act, but countless more have fallen. It took a movement to get it done.

The FDNY’s Ray Pfeifer fought for this to his dying day, as did Lou Alvarez of the PD.

The law is named for Jimmy, Ray and Lou, but it’s for all the heroes and victims.
