Proud Boys jury gets a look at attack vid

- BY SHAYNA JACOBS

Jurors in the trial of two members of the far-right group Proud Boys accused of beating up political rivals on the Upper East Side last year saw videos of the attack Monday.

Footage from a surveillance camera shows a member of the anti-fascist movement known as Antifa hurling a water bottle at a group of Proud Boys on E. 82nd St. near Lexington Ave., about a block from the Metropolitan Republican Club on E. 83rd St.

Seconds after the bottle is thrown, several Proud Boys surround a handful of Antifa members who were clad in black hoodies and masks. As a fight breaks out, the camera captures Proud Boys John Kinsman (near right) and Maxwell Hare (far right) involved in the melee.

Lawyers for the two have argued they were under threat from the other side. Kinsman and Hare, on trial in Manhattan Supreme Court for attempted gang assault, watched the clips on a TV monitor in the court. They sat expressionless as their parents looked on from the gallery.

The brawl on Oct. 12, 2018, followed a speech at the Metropolitan ReProud publican Club by Gavin McInnes, the former Proud Boys leader who reportedly split from the group over ideological differences.

The jury also saw a cell phone video shot by Boys member Christopher Wright, who captured some of the skirmish.

“That’s fascism back there,” he says of the Antifa crowd. He also delivered a play-by-play of the aftermath, insisting that McInnes was just “doing what he does and see how we get attacked?”

Wright soon after adds, “Conservative in New York, baby. Keepin’ it real,” before signing off with “Make America great again! Trump 2020!”

Prosecutors say the Proud Boys who participated in the fight got the better of the Antifa group. Ten members were arrested and indicted on charges in the brawl. All but three have already pleaded guilty.

The two groups have had confrontations in other cities since the incident, including in Washington and Portland, Ore.
