- BY THERESA BRAINE

The bodies of the two teens suspected in three murders in British Columbia were found in desolate woods in Manitoba after a weeks-long manhunt, Canadian authorities announced Wednesday.

Searchers located “two male bodies in the dense brush,” said Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy, commanding officer of the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police, at a press conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba. “We are confident that these are the bodies of the two suspects wanted in connection with the homicides in British Columbia.”

She added that they would be autopsied to confirm their identities and determine a cause of death.

Kam McLeod (inset r.) and Bryer Schmegelsky (inset l.), both 19, had been sought in connection with the deaths of three people in British Columbia, including Chynna Deese, 24, of North Carolina, and her Australian boyfriend, 23-year-old Lucas Fowler. The two were found shot to death on July 15.

The third victim was Vancouver botanist and University of British Columbia lecturer Leonard Dyck, whose body was found July 19 along a remote highway.

Searchers found a dilapidated aluminum rowboat and other personal items known to belong to the teens over the weekend. This enabled authorities to narrow down the search, dispatching divers and scouring the woods, leading to Wednesday’s grisly discovery.

“It’s huge to be able to hopefully give some people an opportunity to exhale,” MacLatchy said. in the briefing. “And to hopefully eventually go back to normal and not be afraid of who’s out in the woods.”
