Best mayor, worst airport

-

LaGuardia Airport has never been easy to get to. It’s been especially awful the last couple of days, and might get even worse with new roadway changes starting today. It’s partly the ever-shifting rabbit warren of entrances and exits caused by the construction of a new airport on the site of the current one. It’s partly heavy summer travel. It’s partly crazy weather.

Add it up, and it’s gotten so jammed, some passengers have had to abandon their vehicles and trudge on foot to the terminals, luggage in tow.

What’s that Joe Biden once said about the Third World?

While construction is still underway — and with Gov. Cuomo’s plan to build an overpriced, poorly-routed people mover from Willets Point to LGA years off — tiptoeing toward the First World means doing everything possible to get people out of single-occupancy private cars or for-hire vehicles. Of the 30 million

people who flew through LaGuardia last year, the vast majority came and went that way.

Some people are carrying so many bags and kids they have no choice but to ride by themselves. Everyone else should feel a powerful pull to find a more space-efficient way to the airport.

The Q70 bus, a 10-minute hop from the subway, is free until Labor Day. Do not reinstate the fare. The city and Port Authority should mount an all-out publicity push to encourage ridership, not just at the airport but across the five boroughs. Last month, Port boss Rick Cotton told this Editorial Board that Q70 signage isn’t what it needs to be. Fix it, right away.

Ditto the M60 bus, which goes to Manhattan; make it free. Publicize it.

Explore giving dedicated road space, if any is available, to those buses.

Flying in America stinks. Something is wrong in America when getting to the airport stinks more.
