Jets have office mojo

- BY MANISH MEHTA

The marriage between Adam Gase and Joe Douglas has started off swimmingly, which shouldn’t be surprising in the least bit. After all, the Jets went all-in with Gase by signing off on his preferred choice to replace the fired Mike Maccagnan.

“He’s such a good communicator,” Gase said. “He either comes down or I’m up there a lot. And he’ll say, ‘Hey, here’s what we’re thinking here, here, here and here’s the corresponding move.’ And that’s what these guys do for a living. Our job is to coach the players that we have on the roster. When you have the same vision and you think the same, you think culture first. We’ve been kind of raised the same way. So, we see players pretty much the same.”

Douglas has made a pair of aggressive moves in the past week to bolster the offensive line, luring former Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil out of retirement and trading for Ravens guard/tackle Alex Smith to improve the overall depth of the unit.

“I think the fact that our GM is a former offensive lineman, I’m pretty sure you guys know that he’s going to be looking for those type of guys,” Gase said. “His type of linemen: tough, physical, smart guys that can play multiple positions and play both sides of the line. I think that’s what he’s going to be combing the Earth for.”

Gase could use Douglas’ help now to find some cornerbacks — and maybe a kicker — too. Gang Green’s backup defensive backs struggled in the preseason opener against the Giants on Thursday. Kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a pair of PATs after having his fair share of struggles in camp.
