Manhattan: Earlier this year, the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued major New York debt collection law firms for churning out lawsuits against consumers without thoroughly reviewing the relevant documents. Hundreds of thousands of New York consumers were forced into court over debts they either did not owe or that were for the wrong amount.

Unfortunately, a recently proposed rule by the CFPB will make it harder to hold debt collectors accountable for such practices in the future.

The proposed debt collection rule fails to ensure that debt collection attorneys are required to review account-level documentation before suing. Instead, the rule will offer a way for debt collectors to escape liability when they fail to properly review account documents before filing lawsuits.

If the CFPB’s proposed debt collection rule goes into effect, millions of New Yorkers will be left more vulnerable than ever to harassment and abuse by debt collection attorneys. The CFPB must revise its proposal before more New Yorkers are unjustly dragged into court. Clark A. Binkley

Bad apples

Brooklyn: Let’s be honest: the NYPD officers doused in water are lucky to be alive. Millions of Americans secretly smile when police are killed because they have had bad experiences with bad cops. No one can dispute the endless stream of police corruption scandals. Even with cameras filming them, many cops act like thugs. We must unite to get rid of bad cops. I agree that there is a war on police but it’s from the rude, macho, thuggish officers who make society dislike policemen en masse.

Manhattan: An open letter to the New York City Department of Education! Here we go again, the start of another school year. Are you ready? Do you have enough bus drivers? Do they know the routes? Staten Island: I was moved and saddened by the tears and fears of the children whose immigrant parents were rounded up in Mississippi. The children were the real victims here. Responsibility lies solely and squarely with the parents who knew the risks of breaking

immigration laws and working here illegally. They chose to do it anyway and, in doing so, exposed their children to trauma. Brooklyn: Voicer Sam Soffer’s suggestion that “days since last mass murder” should be posted like “days since last accident” statistics shows a dangerous misunderstanding of the dynamics underlying two very different situations. Accidents are the result of inattention, and are not deliberately designed to create a body count. Victims cannot make themselves safer by knowing how long it’s been since others were killed. Any publicity given to the killer just motivates other dysfunctional people to emulate them.

Middle Village: While I am no mental health advocate as Chirlane McCray states she is, I’d like to try and make sense of her Aug. 8 op-ed, “Guns, mental health and truth.” Where exactly are we locking up people with mental illness? Aren’t our city’s mental health facilities almost nonexistent or failing miserably? Our criminal justice system has been forced to deal with mental illness issues because no one else is stepping up. What is her projection going forward to protect innocent lives from someone who purchased a gun to use to kill as many people as possible? And, would you not consider whether that person was of sound mind prior to pulling the trigger? A horse also did not “collapse.” She quickly moved backwards when her lines (reins) got caught on the carriage and she tripped. She was standing again uninjured about 30 seconds later. NYCLASS shouldn’t be allowed to spin these stories to push Intro 1425. Heat and humidity is not relevant to these incidents, and a “trip” is not a “collapse.”
