Darnold aims to return in Week 5

- BY MANISH MEHTA

Mono-stricken Sam Darnold revealed Tuesday that he’s aiming to come back for the Jets’ road game against the Eagles in Week 5.

“I feel great,” Darnold said in his weekly spot on ESPN 98.7 FM Tuesday. “I feel amazing. My energy’s back up. I’m not stuffed up anymore. I feel fine. You got to wait this thing out. I got to wait for my spleen to get back to normal.”

The 0-2 Jets face a daunting stretch over the next month that features two games the Patriots and two formidable NFC opponents (Philly and Dallas).

“I’m confident in our team to be able to rally,” Darnold said. “Obviously, we got the bye after the Pats game (on Sunday). Hopefully, I’ll be able to re-cooperate and get back after it and work out a little bit. Hopefully the goal is to be back against Philly. Week 5. That’s the goal for me. That’s what the doctors are estimating.”Darnold admitted that he didn’t feel right before the season opener against the Bills last week. He had difficulty sleeping and cold sweats in the run-up to the Jets 17-16 loss to Buffalo. The second-year signal caller went 28 for 41 for 175 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

“If I get back for Philly and we go on a little run… obviously we got our work cut out for us,” Darnold said. “And nothing’s easy in the NFL, nothing ’s given to us. If we go on a little run, anything’s possible. So, we’re excited about it.”

Darnold, who said he only lost two pounds during the illness, returned to the team facility for the first time Tuesday since getting the diagnosis last week. He said that he hasn’t yet asked when he can resume throwing, but he’s obviously no longer contagious.

Darnold watched Gang Green’s 23-3 loss to the Browns with his parents at his New Jersey apartment.
