Congress not for me – Chelsea
Suburban New York Democrats dreaming of another Clinton in Congress are in for some bad news.
Chelsea Clinton (inset), who was recently approached by Westchester County Democrats about running for outgoing New York Rep. Nita Lowey’s seat, shot down the prospect of launching a 2020 campaign on Wednesday.
“I’m not considering running for Congresswoman Lowey’s seat,” Clinton, 39, said during an appearance on ABC. “I understand why people are asking.”
The daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she has heard “some version of this question” since she was 3 or 4 years old, when she was asked whether she was planning to run for governor of Arkansas.
Clinton, whose mother also served as a New York senator for years before becoming secretary of state and a Democratic presidential nominee, said she’s focused on her family at the moment, but didn’t completely slam the door on a career in public service.
“I don’t know, but right now the answer is no,” said the married mother of three children.
A source told the Daily News last week that Westchester County Democratic Party leaders were pitching Clinton on running for Lowey’s seat in light of the longtime congresswoman’s announcement last Thursday that she’s retiring at the end of this term.
The outreach to Clinton began within hours of Lowey, 82, announcing she won’t run for reelection next year.
Lowey’s district spans parts of Westchester and Rockland Counties and includes Chappaqua, the ritzy suburb where Chelsea Clinton’s prominent parents live.
