NYCHA gives cancer sick man a break

- BY MICHAEL GARTLAND

A Brooklyn man won a brief reprieve Monday in his fight to remain inside his mother’s apartment as he struggles with Stage 4 cancer.

William Sanchez, who moved into the Brownsville apartment to take care of his dying mother, has been battling the New York City Housing Authority for months so he can stay as he faces his own health crisis.

His win came Monday afternoon in Brooklyn Housing Court, where a judge’s decision stayed eviction proceedings and allowed Sanchez (inset) to remain in the Woodson Houses apartment for another three months.

Sanchez, 64, has had difficulty speaking since the cancer in his liver spread to his lungs and throat.

“We laud the court for granting this stay and thank NYCHA for not contesting our motion,” said Lucinda James, the Legal Aid Society attorney who represents him. “This critical time will allow Mr. Sanchez to stay in his home and focus on his health.”

James urged NYCHA to terminate its eviction proceeding when the case goes back to court in January.

Sanchez’s story, which was first told in the Daily News, began three years ago when he moved into his mom’s apartment to help in her own battle with cancer. Before she died, the family attempted to secure official residency for Sanchez in the apartment.

“The manager said everything was taken care of,” Sanchez told The News two weeks ago. “I was under the impression everything was OK.”

It wasn’t, and after his mom died, NYCHA moved to evict him. On Monday, by opting not to fight Sanchez’s order to show cause, it appears NYCHA has softened its stance.

“NYCHA will continue to respect the wishes of the court and weigh every consideration for Mr. Sanchez as we have throughout this process,” said spokeswoman Barbara Brancaccio.
