H’ween ire spurs her to quit arts job

A Brooklyn homeowner whose racially offensive Halloween display sparked outrage in her community resigned Friday from the art studio she cofounded.

Dany Rose quickly apologized Wednesday for the display in her Clinton Hill window that featured cutouts of brown paper dolls hanging by their necks from strings, but not before angry neighbors urged patrons to stay away from her Bedford-Stuyvesant art studio.

Rose, in a short letter to ArtShack’s board of directors, offered her resignation, but stopped short of mentioning the controversy that put her on the hot seat.

“Please accept this notice of my resignation as co-d irector of Artshack Brooklyn, effective immediately,” Rose said in the letter, which was posted on the art studio’s web page. “This organization has strong roots, and I will look forward to watching it grow and thrive in the future.”

Rose could not be reached for comment.

The resignation came a day after sign-waving neighbors and activists staged a protest outside her home, which sits across the street from an elementary school.

Parents from Public School 11 expressed their anger over the Halloween display, saying that they had to explain to their boys and girls the racist implications.

A parent first noticed the display on Tuesday when she walked by with her kids. She said she took pictures and knocked on the homeowner’s door, but got no answer. Then she posted the photos on her Facebook page, and the snapshots went viral.

The mother notified officials at the school, who asked Rose to take down the display.

The decorations were photographed and shared on Facebook the same day President Trump compared the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry to a lynching.
