Mosley’s season in
Gang Green LB could land on season-ending
C.J. Mosley’s season is in serious doubt after Adam Gase revealed that he will not play against the Jaguars on Sunday. Jets medical personnel have been doing a “deep dive” into Mosley’s nagging groin injury that caused him to miss four games and struggle in his return last week against the Patriots.
Asked whether Mosley could land on injured reserve, Gase offered this ominous response Friday: “I think everything’s on the table right now.”
Gase admitted that he’ll have more information after the game, but it’s obvious that the Pro Bowl linebacker isn’t coming back anytime soon — if at all — this season. The Jets signed Mosley to a blockbuster five-year, $85 million deal with $51 million in guarantees this offseason to be the quarterback for Greg Williams’ defense.
The difference maker had a pick-six and fumble recovery in his Jets debut before leaving in the second half in the season opener with what was initially believed to be a moderate groin injury. Mosley, who had missed just three games in the first five years of his career, missed the next four games. He didn’t look like his typical dominant self in the Jets’ 33-0 loss to the Patriots, prompting the team to take a closer look at what else might be hindering him.
“We’ll know more information after we get through this game as far as what we’re going to be doing, what he’s going to be doing,” Gase said. “So, we’re going to get through this game and I’ll have better information here. So, that’s where we’re at right.”
It’s a less-than-ideal spot for Williams & Co.
It’s unclear whether Mike linebacker Neville Hewitt, who replaced Mosley for four games before missing last week with neck/knee injuries, will play. Reserve inside linebacker Albert McClellan, who missed last week with a concussion, won’t play against the Jaguars, leaving Williams to adjust by sliding outside linebackers inside. Veteran outside linebacker Brandon Copeland has been getting practice reps inside due to the injuries at the position.
“We’ve been working him there,” Gase said. “We’ve kind of had a plan with our outside guys sliding inside anyway over the last couple weeks. Because we’ve gone into each game with just two inside linebackers. But we’ve been working that for about three weeks now. It hasn’t been an ideal situation losing some guys. It seems like whatever position has been kind of
