CEO caught on video ripping Gang to fan
Jets CEO Christopher Johnson penned the latest chapter of this lost season by revealing how he really feels about his terrible team. The owner’s brother was caught on video throwing everyone under the bus before Gang Green’s loss to the Jaguars on Sunday during an exchange with a fan, who told him that he had driven nine hours from Alabama to Jacksonville.
“Yeah, well hopefully the team will actually show up this week,” said Johnson.
It was an ironic admission by a man who has been in hiding for the better part of five months since firing general manager Mike Maccagnan. The Jets did not return multiple requests for comment.
Johnson has chosen not to be accountable, while his hand-picked head coach, Adam Gase, has been a disaster this season. He hasn’t answered for any of his decisions since an 11-minute conference call in the wake of Maccagnan’s ouster in May.
Johnson resurfaced briefly to read a prepared statement during Joe Douglas’ introductory press conference in June.
His approval rating has plummeted since he assumed control of the day-today operations of the franchise while Woody Johnson serves as the UK Ambassador of the Trump Administration.
The owner’s brother was a breath of fresh air when he took over in August 2017, but he has steadily fallen out of favor with the fan base after a series of questionable decisions that backfired.
Christopher Johnson gave contract extensions to Todd Bowles and Maccagnan through 2020 only to fire both of them before the 2019 season. He allowed his GM to run the head coach search, spend more than $120 million in free agency and steer the draft only to fire him three weeks later.
Johnson privately assured people on One Jets Drive after the draft that rumblings during the draft that Maccagnan was on his way out were untrue. Then, Johnson fired Maccagnan.
Johnson’s indecisiveness and inexperience have been glaring.
Team sources told the Daily News that Johnson became angry at reports questioning his decision-making. Moreover, he grew agitated when word surfaced that he hosted Kliff Kingsbury’s agent at his Manhattan apartment while Bowles was still the coach. He also was perturbed when it leaked out that the organization used a proxy to gauge interest from highprofile coaches, while Bowles was still on the sideline. Team sources said that Johnson went so far as to attempt to blacklist anyone who sharply criticized him for his actions.
The Jets have gone backwards under Christopher Johnson’s stewardship. Gang Green is 10-29 (.256) since Woody’s brother has been in charge. They’ve endured three three-game losing streaks, two four-game losing streaks and one six-game losing streak with him at the helm.
The Jets had back-to-back losing seasons in Christopher’s first two seasons after never having any in Woody’s 17 seasons. It’s the first time the franchise has had consecutive losing seasons since the Rich Kotite era.
It’s also the worst 39-game stretch since Woody Johnson became the owner in 2000. By contrast, Woody went 21-18 with a playoff appearance in his first 39 games in charge. The Jets are 138-146 with six playoff appearances with Woody at the helm.
Christopher Johnson has fired a head coach, general manager and team president in 26 months.
Johnson waxed poetic about Adam Gase the day that he was introduced as the new HC of the NYJ, calling him an “innovator” who was “coaching football to where it’s going.”
That sounds like a bunch of gobbledygook now. Gase is 1-6 with the worst offense in the NFL. The Jets have lost five games by at least two touchdowns after losing six by at least 14 points all last season.
When adversity hit, Johnson disappeared. True leaders shine in those moments, but the acting owner opted to hide. Johnson’s annual in-season media session took place after Week 2 in 2017 and after Week 1 in 2018 when he outlined his expectations for the months ahead.
It’s been a different story this year. The team’s PR department has told the News on several occasions that there is no scheduled date for Johnson to address the media.
It seems that Johnson realizes that his golden boy coach has been a mess. But were those just words to placate a frustrated fan? Or will Christopher Johnson actually do something about this dumpster fire?
It’s time for the CEO to come out of hiding and be accountable.
