No. 5 Kansas routs Monmouth

-

Isaiah Moss poured in 21 points to lead six Jayhawks in double-figures scoring, and No. 5 Kansas romped to a 11257 victory over undersized and outclassed Monmouth on Friday night in Lawrence, Kan.

Moss, who missed the season opener against Duke because of an injury, was 5 of 6 from beyond the arc as the Jayhawks (2-1) ran their home winning streak to 23 straight games. The streak is the thirdlongest in the nation behind only Tennessee (28) and Gonzaga (25).

Devon Dotson added 17 points, David McCormack had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Udoka Azubuike finished with 12 points and eight boards for Kansas. Freshman guard Christian Braun was 3 for 3 from the arc and had 11 points, while Silvio de Sousa finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Kansas hit 14 3-pointers and shot 56% from the field.

Deion Hammond had 17 points to lead the Hawks (1-3), who didn't make a field goal until midway through the first half. George Papas had 12 points and Ray Salnave added 11.

U.S. MEN BEAT CANADA

Sergino Dest set up a goal in the second minute of his American competitive debut, Gyasi Zardes scored twice and the United States overwhelmed Canada early in a 4-1 CONCACAF Nations League match on Friday night.

A month after Canada embarrassed the Americans with a 2-0 victory at Toronto for its first win over the Americans since 1985, Jordan Morris, Zardes and Aaron Long scored as the U.S. built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Steven Vitoria cut Canada's deficit in the 72nd minute and Zardes got his 12th international goal in the 89th, capping a victory that may lessen some of the criticism of U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter and his play-fromthe-back system. The U.S. (2-1) would finish ahead of Canada (3-1) to win the group and advance to the semifinals of the first CONCACAF Nations League if it beats Cuba (0-3) on Tuesday in a match moved to George Town, Cayman Islands, because of issues with the stadium lights in Havana. The Americans overtook the Canadians in goal difference, plus-eight to plus-six, and Canada has completed group play.

LEE FIRES 62 TO LEAD

Danny Lee felt as though he could make everything Friday, and for the longest time he did.

Already at 10-under par through 13 holes, Lee started thinking about a sub-60 round when he hit a downhill birdie putt too hard and wound up three-putting for bogey. Four pars later, he had to settle for a 9-under 62 and a one-shot lead among early starters in the Mayakoba Classic.

“Definitely, it was in my head, 59 or 58,” Lee said. “I never shot that score out on the PGA Tour before, so I really wanted to make that happen. On 14, I had a 3% downhill, less than 15-footer for birdie. Just one of those days I felt like I can make anything. I just gave a little too much extra and hit it through the break and missed the next one coming back.

“I was a little bit bummed out on that one,” he said. “But still, 9-under is a great start.”

Lee had a one-shot lead over Adam Long and Brendon Todd, who resurrected his career two weeks ago with a win in the Bermuda Championship.

PIRARES TO HIRE CHERINGTON AS GM

The Pirates have agreed to hire Ben Cherington as their general manager, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the agreement had not been announced.

Pittsburgh scheduled a news conference on Monday to introduce its new GM without revealing the person's identity. Cherington will replace Neal Huntington, who was hired in September 2007 and fired in October.

Now 45, Cherington took over from Theo Epstein as GM of the Boston Red Sox in October 2011. Cherington helped the Red Sox win the 2013 Series but left in August 2015 when Boston hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations. Boston finished last in the AL East in three of Cherington's four seasons as GM.
