‘Your dog got killed in my house’

- BY MARCO POGGIO AND GRAHAM RAYMAN

A Bronx woman who left her beloved Yorkshire terrier overnight with neighbors was devastated to learn the dog died when a a gunman fired through their door.

“She thinks it’s my fault,” said Samuel Pesante, who was watching the pooch when gunshots pierced his seventh-floor apartment door in the Adams Houses in Melrose about 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Hercules, his neighbor’s 7year-old Yorkie, was visiting the apartment to breed with the Pesante family dog, Krystal.

“Saturday she brought him in. Sunday he dies. Not even a day!” Pesante said.

Pesante, 54, his wife and 8-year-old daughter escaped injury, along with Krystal. When Hercules’ owner returned to retrieve him, Pesante had to break the news.

“She stood there with a sad face, like, ‘What are [you] trying to tell me?’ ” Pesante said.

“I’m over here trying to explain to her, ‘Listen, a lot of things happened that Sunday.’ And I started showing her bullets holes on my door.”

Police sources believe the shooting was gang-related and that the gunman argued with Pesante beforehand. But Pesante told the Daily News he’d never seen the men before and claimed there was no argument.

Cops Monday released photos of the suspected shooter and two alleged accomplices and asked the public’s help identifying them. There have been no arrests.

About two months ago, burglars broke into Pesante’s home and took the family’s savings, which amounted to tens of thousands of dollars he didn’t trust to put into a bank. Pesante says the gunman may have been trying to rob him again.

Hercules’ owner saw a report on a social media app about the shooting and dreaded her dog might be the victim, Pesante said.

“I was explaining to her how me and my wife were struggling with this dude, fighting for my life and my family’s,” Pesante said. “I came up and told her, ‘Listen, your dog, I’m sorry. Your dog got killed in my house.’ ”
