Cop quits amid Tenn. racial rap

- BY THOMAS TRACY AND ROCCO PARASCANDOLA

A white off-duty NYPD cop busted in Nashville for barging into a black woman’s home in a drunken stupor and threatening her family with racial slurs has resigned, the NYPD said Thursday.

Officer Michael Reynolds, who was recently sentenced to time in jail, was told Monday to show up at 1 Police Plaza Thursday so the NYPD could begin its disciplinary case against him, which almost certainly would have resulted in his firing, police sources said.

Instead Reynolds (inset), who had been on modified duty, resigned. He will not get his pension or health benefits and cannot carry a gun.

“His actions are wholly inconsistent with the values and standards the New York City Police Department expects and demands of its officers,” said Acting Deputy Commissioner Devora Kaye, the NYPD’s top spokesperson.

Reynolds, 26, could not be reached for comment. He joined the NYPD five years ago.

In September, he pleaded no contest to assault and trespassing charges. He was sentenced on Dec. 6 to 15 days in jail. The sentence is not due to start until next month.

The NYPD said it did not begin its disciplinary case immediately after the case was adjudicated because it didn’t want to interfere with a possible appeal in the criminal case.

More than 10,000 people have signed an online petition demanding Reynolds be fired.

Reynolds testified in court that he has no memory of the incident aside from identifying himself as a cop to Nashville police.

“I’m sorry,” he said during his sentencing. “I made a mistake. I consumed too much alcohol.”

Reynolds was at a bachelor party for fellow NYPD Officer Thomas Geberth when he was caught on video on July 9, 2018, breaking into the victim’s home at 2:30 a.m. and calling the woman, Conese Halliburton, and her family a racial slur.
