An woman was killed Thursday when she fell under the wheels of a Brooklyn MTA bus while trying to exit as it rolled off, sources said.
The victim fell under the wheels of the B41 bus near Flatlands and Flatbush Aves. in Flatlands about 9:30 a.m., cops said.
“It appears a passenger was on the New York City bus and was attempting to get off,” NYPD Chief Charles Scholl said at the scene. “She went under the rear wheels of the vehicle.”
Witnesses told police that the woman, believed to be in her 30s, realized she had missed her stop and ran to the front, demanding to be let off.
“She was supposed to get off at Kings Highway, but she missed her stop and the bus kept going,” said witness Kevin Joseph, 28, who talked to horrified bus riders. “She wanted to get out, but the driver wouldn’t let her.”
When the 60-year-old bus driver wouldn’t immediately comply she began kicking the door, trying to open it, sources said.
The MTA driver tried to slow down and let the woman off, but she managed to force the doors open and stepped off the bus while it was still in motion, sources said.
She struck a wooden utility pole the bus was passing, knocking her under the bus, where she was run over by the back wheels, sources said.
“It appears it is no fault of the operator of the city bus. It’s another tragedy of people not being careful and putting themselves in harm’s way,” Scholl said. “It’s another tragic loss of life, but it’s definitely something that could’ve been avoided.”
The victim died at the scene from massive head and body injuries.
