L.A. city council presses MLB to give Astros, Red Sox titles to Dodgers
Even though MLB didn’t strip the Astros and Red Sox of their titles despite their signstealing accusations, the Los Angeles City Council is pressing the league to rewrite history.
The Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday urging the league to take back Houston and Boston’s rings and hand them over to their hometown Dodgers.
The resolution, initially proposed by members Gil Cedillo and Paul Koretz on Wednesday, states: “The Commissioner of Major League Baseball remove the 2017 and 2018 World Series titles from the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox and hereby requests that the Commissioner of Major League Baseball recall the World Series Commissioner’s Trophies and award them to the Los Angeles Dodgers.”
So far, the Astros were fined $5 million by the league — the maximum allowed by current league by-laws — while former GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were suspended for a year, leading to their subsequent firings. The Astros also had to give up their first and secondround draft picks from the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Red Sox are still being investigated but preemptively fired manager Alex Cora for his role in the cheating system while working as Houston’s bench coach.
The Dodgers lost to Houston and Boston in back-toback seasons, making the sign-stealing particularly painful for the Council’s hometown team and their fans. Naturally, local politicians are capitalizing on local frustrations with both teams’ stolen valor — even if it’s unlikely to bring any trophies back to L.A.
The Dodgers have won six straight NL West titles but haven’t secured a championship since 1988.
